What is dedicated server web hosting?

A dedicated server web hosting service is when a single customer leases or purchases an entire server for their own use, rather than sharing use of the server computer with other customers.

Using a dedicated server hosting service provides a higher level of flexibility than using a shared service, since the customer can choose their own hardware, operating system, customized software configuration, etc., according to their needs. Additionally a dedicated server may provide greater security (because their is no danger of other hosting customer accessing your data, and/or compromising the server's security), and reliability (since there is no danger of other customer causing problems leading to outages).

Dedicated server system can be quite expensive, but for those customers who need these features, it is worth the money. Customers should also be aware that dedicated server services usually have costs associated with the initial setup, a monthly rental/operating fee, and a bandwidth usage charge. It is very important to understand how bandwidth usage charges will be calculated before entering into a contract, so it is worth spending some time researching this issue.

Another issue to look at when choosing a dedicated server service provider is to look at things such as network uptime, service level guarantees, and backup policies. Make sure you are satisfied on all these issues before entering into a contract.

The operating system used for dedicated server hosting depends upon the choice of customer and also the availability. The most common dedicated server operating systems including Linux variants (including CentOS, Debian, Fedora Core, Red Hat Linux, etc.,), UNIX variants (such as BSD UNIX), and Microsoft Windows. Of course, not all operating system choices may be offered or supported by all hosting providers.

To summarize then, dedicated server is when a customer gets exclusive control of an entire server computer to run their website (or websites). The advantage of using a dedicated server is greater control, flexibility, reliability and security. The only real disadvantage is cost - dedicated server hosting can be relatively expensive. Before choosing a dedicated server package, customers should carefully look at the detailed costing, especially any associated bandwidth charges, as well as check the service suits their needs in terms of operating system, network uptime guarantees, etc.
